Where Theory Meets Practice: Lessons from the Learning Journey

Partnering with B Lab to make equity actionable, measurable, and sustainable across the B Corp community.

Organizations often struggle to translate Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) principles from abstract ideas into concrete strategies. The Learning Journey 2025 was developed by B Lab U.S. & Canada in partnership with expert partners including Provoc, The Opt-In, Construct the Present, and Elleria Consulting to bridge that gap, equipping a core group of B Network Leaders—the B Corp movement’s key influencers—with practical tools, frameworks, and strategies to embed equity into their daily work. This iteration moved participants from understanding to application, creating measurable impact across the B Corp community.

The Challenge

Many leaders understood the “why” behind equity work, but lacked a clear roadmap for implementation. Without a structured program, participants risked inconsistent application of principles, potential harm within the ecosystem, and missed opportunities to scale impact effectively.

The Learning Journey aimed to:

  • Move leaders from theory to action, embedding racial equity into every decision.
  • Connect foundational knowledge with measurable outcomes.
  • Connect foundational knowledge with measurable outcomes.

Our Approach

At Elleria Consulting, our role was to refine the Learning Journey and its resources. Building on prior collaboration, we entered the refinement phase with deep familiarity with the program, which allowed us to quickly identify opportunities for improvement. We started by analyzing existing materials and participant feedback, uncovering where participants needed more support, guidance, and actionable resources.

From there, we worked closely with B Lab to refine the Logic Model, align learning objectives with antiracist and climate justice goals, update surveys to accurately measure progress, and enhance both the workbook and toolkit for real-world application. We also partnered on key strategic topics like data ethics, alumni engagement, and pre-event planning. Throughout, we remained committed to flexibility and responsiveness, ensuring that the Learning Journey could adapt to evolving needs while keeping participants at the center.

Impact: From Knowledge to Action

By refining the program’s core components, introducing actionable tools, and facilitating a key session, Elleria Consulting played a central role in the success of the Learning Journey 2025. The program effectively moved participants from understanding to application, with 46 of 63 participants remaining highly engaged—a testament to the value of this intensive, high-touch learning experience.

Participants consistently reported deeper understanding and greater confidence in applying equity principles. By the program’s conclusion, they felt equipped to collect data, implement equity-informed actions, and embed JEDI principles into strategic planning, hiring practices, and partnerships. Areas showing the most growth were closely tied to the workshop we facilitated on building ethical and inclusive data practices.

Our facilitated workshop for the Learning Journey focused on building a robust framework for ethical data collection and analysis. We facilitated a comprehensive training that equipped B Network Leaders with the skills to not only collect data but also to interpret it in a way that reveals systemic trends.

We focused on several key areas:

  • Ethical Data Practices: We trained participants on the principles of ethical data collection and storage, including ensuring anonymity and understanding the implications of data on different communities.
  • Inclusive Methodologies: We guided discussions on how to design surveys and ask questions about social identities like race, ethnicity, and gender identity in a way that is both meaningful and methodologically sound.
  • Advanced Analytical Tools: Participants were introduced to key frameworks, such as the disproportionality index, which helps to uncover systemic inequities within their ecosystem.

This practical, hands-on approach to data training allowed participants to move from theoretical knowledge to real-world application. By embedding these new data practices into their processes, B Network Leaders can now better understand the experiences of diverse groups and make more equitable, informed decisions for the future.

The Learning Journey Workbook, originally designed & refined by Elleria Consulting, was cited by participants as a crucial resource, providing clarity and guidance for applying concepts in their work. All participants will also have access to the Learning Journey Toolkit, developed to support practical application of JEDI principles across contexts. Importantly, the toolkit will be publicly available, extending the impact of the program to the broader B Corp community and anyone seeking to embed equity into their work.

Beyond metrics, participants described applying these learnings across organizations—shaping policies, strategic initiatives, and partnerships. They also took meaningful steps toward formal accountability mechanisms, including equity audits and Employee Resource Groups, signaling a commitment to long-term, sustainable impact.

Lessons Carried Forward

This collaboration reminded us that deep, lasting learning isn’t just about the content—it’s about the connection. B Lab placed significant trust in Elleria Consulting to lead survey design, refine the logic model, and generate all program reports, giving us the space to guide the program’s direction and impact thoughtfully. Our previous work on Learning Journey 2024 laid a foundation of trust, which meant we could hit the ground running, focus on what mattered most, and make meaningful improvements quickly. It proved that strong partnerships are as critical as any curriculum.

We also learned that meaningful learning can be messy, in the best way. Slight dips in some endpoint scores weren’t setbacks—they were participants wrestling with nuance, moving from theory to real-world application. These moments highlighted the importance of practical tools, high-touch facilitation, and support that meets people where they are.

Open communication, trust, and mutual respect allowed both teams to navigate bumps in the process, adapt thoughtfully, and keep the work centered on impact. From participant feedback to the application-focused workshop we facilitated, every insight will guide future iterations, ensuring the Learning Journey continues to create sustainable, measurable change—and maybe even spark a little joy along the way. If your organization is ready to move beyond concepts and into a program that delivers lasting, systemic change, we can help. Let's discuss how we can partner to turn your mission into measurable results.
